7 Reasons Why

Litter Picking

Will Make You Feel Great!

It’s everywhere.

There’s no escaping it.

It’s on our beaches, it’s in our oceans, it’s in our countryside, it’s in our rivers and our neighbourhoods are covered in it!

So what can we do about it?

We can clean it up! And it’ll make you feel great when you do!

1) Cleaning up the environment

We’re pretty sure this one is self explanatory!

By picking up the trash you find on your litter pick you’ll be removing it from the environment, it won’t be able to break down into microplastics and affect our soil, rivers or oceans.

A cleaner environment is great for everyone and everything!

2) Protecting Wildlife

We’ve all seen the shocking photographs of wildlife who have been harmed by plastic waste.

By picking it up and disposing of it properly you’re preventing it from hurting an innocent animal.

3) Creating a safer environment for everyone

As well as making our outdoor spaces safer for wildlife you’re also helping to keep people safe.

The amount of broken glass and sharp pieces of plastic littering our parks, beaches and pavements is quite shocking.

Taking the time to remove makes those places safer for people to visit and more welcoming at the same time.

4) Being a part of the community

Getting out and being seen by other people that live near you can instill a sense of community.

We often have people who walk past as we are litter picking tell us that we’re doing a good job and even have people driving by giving us a thumbs up.

If you post about it on local social media groups you may even get people ask if they can join you next time.

You’ll be surprised by how many people would like to help if given the opportunity.

5) Educating children and future generations

Is there anything more important than teaching our children the importance of respecting the world around us?

Show them at a young age and they will grow up to treasure the beauty of our world and they’ll pass the message on to their own children.

They learn valuable life skills when litter picking such as:

  •  Awareness of the world around them and the importance of taking care of it.
  •  How to stay safe and the importance of being careful.
  •  Responsibility – for their own actions and for keeping their surroundings clean and healthy.
  •  That we have a choice to take action to protect what we care about.
  •  Social skills – particularly if you take part in a group activity but also from talking to people you encounter whilst out.

6) Physical exercise

You can cover quite some ground whilst litter picking!

The exercise you do when litter picking is great for mobility – walking around, bending and reaching.

Walking is also great for:

  •  Your heart health.
  •  Maintaining a healthy weight.
  •  Muscle tone.
  •  Regulating your blood pressure.
  •  Reducing Stress.

And much more!

7) Inspiring others

Litter picking sends a great message, you’ll inspire many others to get out there and do the same.

It won’t just be people who live locally to where you choose to litter pick, it will be the passers by, those who see you as they drive by in their cars, the people you talk to about it, anyone that see’s the images you post on social media.

If you have children they’ll most likely tell their friends and teachers about it which could inspire more families and even whole classes to roll up their sleeves and get out there.

1) It's not my rubbish/responsibility!

Well true, you may not have been the one to put it there but if you walk past, acknowledge it and just carry on…

Doesn’t that make you part of the problem?

Be a part of the solution instead.

Keeping our planet clean is everyones responsibility!

And you get all those amazing benefits above!

2) I don't have time

Litter picking does not have to be some kind of big event!

(Although joining large clean up initiatives is a fantastic thing to do if you want to)

Simply picking up litter as you pass it and disposing of it responsibly does not take long at all, literally a few extra seconds.

Whether you spare those few moments or set aside 15/30/45 minutes it really doesn’t have to take long at all.

It all counts!

3) It's embarrassing

This one surprises me!

I’m not sure that being seen to be an upstanding human being who cares about the environment is embarrassing.

If you do feel this way, I would suggest getting a friend on board so you’re not doing it alone.

If you have children just go for it, you’ll be surprised how much they enjoy it (especially if you use a litter picker!!)

There is nothing to be embarrassed about – you’re doing a good deed!

The concept is simple:
Spend just 30 mins (or more!) on Saturday 17th July 2021 doing your own litter pick/trash clean up wherever you are in the world.
